Novartis was established in 1996 following the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz. Novartis and its predecessors have a history of over 250 years, with extensive experience in developing innovative products. From the initial production of synthetic dyestuffs, companies that are becoming Novartis are expanding their activities with chemicals and, ultimately, pharmaceuticals.
The Novartis story outlines the merging paths of three companies: Geigy, a chemical and dye manufacturing company established in Basel, Switzerland, in the middle of the 18th century; Ciba, which began to produce dyes in 1859, and Sandoz, a chemical company founded in Basel in 1886.
These companies share a common goal that is preserved in Novartis: a passion for developing and distributing new products that contribute to human progress through new advances in science and health. Building on its history, Novartis focuses on innovation in delivering solutions to patients’ unsatisfied medical needs across the globe.
